Alices Photography - Rare Solarised Print

This print was made using the solarisation technique in post production (rather than directly onto the negatives as Man Ray did).
The final print took me many attempts to perfect and that is what makes this print extra special.

To create a solarised print in the darkroom, one must first expose the paper to light through a negative, then begin to develop as usual.
Just about as the image begins to appear, the image is removed from the developer and exposed to a short flash of direct, bright light (with no negative) and then placed back into the developer until the processing is complete.
Then stop bath and fix is done as usual.

The experimental nature of this technique means that one print is unlikely to be the same as the next, meaning it can take a great deal of effort to get a single decent print.

The particular element it took me so long to perfect was the Mackie lines (the white lines between areas that were contrasting before the solarisation), which tended to appear and disappear with no specific consistency. In this final print, they are clear and defined, which is the look I was going for!

Blog Introduction

Hello and welcome to our new blog!

As students, of Visual Communication (Photography) at Birmingham City University, we are creating a space to promote and raise awareness of our current print sales as well as work and projects we are currently undertaking. This is a project both to let each other know how we are getting on and to help each other, but to also to show the public the works we are creating and essentially, 'getting our names out there'.

Thanks for checking us out, and we will have some work up soon!
